Our Brown Bear, Summer Light & Cubs tour to Finland is a great opportunity to try and get the bears in great settings! For 2018 we are adding this new 3-day extension to include not only an entirely new site but also the exciting possibility of different species! The main targets for photography will be Brown Bears, Wolverine, Golden Eagles and the enticing chance of Wolves! Wolverines are a regular visitor to this location and should provide fantastic and unusual new species for picture opportunities.
The extension will begin with a transfer from our first lodge, for the 150km drive to our new destination at Viksimo. After a short rest and a chance to check into our accommodation in a modernised, converted border guard post, we will meet the guides and decide on the best hide locations for photography. There is likely to be 2 main choices with a swamp location offering chances for Bears, Wolverines and Wolves and then a wooded gorge where Wolverines and Bears might show in an entirely different setting. Following on from 3 overnight sessions in hides, the first night is left to catch up on some much needed sleep.
Much like our regular Finland Bear trips, the photography will take place overnight in small, yet comfortable professional hides. We will spend 2 nights photographing from various hide locations and it is our intention each guest should experience 2 different spots to get variety in their subsequent images. We will, of course, follow the advice of the local guides who will escort us into the hides at around 4pm. The hide locations are between a 60m – 200m walk from our vehicles so are relatively easy to access. The hides are equipped with a heater and each guest will be provided with snacks and hot drinks for their overnight session.
The guides will escort us out of the hides in the morning when we can return to the lodge for a well-deserved breakfast and the chance for some rest during the day. A second night will then follow the same pattern where we will attempt to learn from our first session and hope for variety in the picture opportunities.
Our tour extension will conclude on day 4, when we will once again be met by the guides and return to the lodge for breakfast. We will then transfer to Oulu for our return flights home to the UK.
Day 1: Transfer
The extension group will be collected from the initial Lodge mid morning and transferred 150km to the Boreal Centre. This day is left clear to catch up on some much needed sleep!
After lunch we will discuss the plans for the following 2 nights of photography with the local guides and then at around 4pm we will leave for the transfer to our hide locations. Photography will then be possible through the evening and overnight. At around 7am, our guides will collect us on the following morning..
After returning from the hides we will have a good breakfast and have a chance to rest and review the pictures from the previous night. At around 3pm we will again have dinner than then be taken to the hide locations for a second night of photography.
Day 4: Return
We will return to the Centre for a well-deserved breakfast. Later that day we will catch the transfer back to Oulu and then onward to Helsinki and the return flight to the UK.
