Summer evenings are often described as offering the very best light for photography, so what better time could there be to enjoy photographing the exciting carnivore subjects at Knowsley Safari Park! The Wild Arena ‘Summer Evening Carnivore Workshop’ offers a great combination of special ‘out of hours’ access with some wonderful animals and photographic tuition from our highly experience, professional guides.

The session will start with a welcome briefing at the main Safari Park entrance where the group will begin their tour. We will set out around the foot safari with the aim of photographing the Tigers, Bush dogs, Meerkats and Wolves (the wonderful pride of lions at Knowsley is the subject of our ‘Lion Photography Morning special’).

Knowsley’s two Female Amur Tigers were relocated to the foot safari last year to a purpose built enclosure surrounding a natural woodland habitat. This new enclosure allows for some great picture opportunities with the wooded and meadow elements giving some wonderful backdrops to these lovely animals. If we are very lucky we may encounter the Tigers cooling off at the end of the day in the natural stream and pond area that runs through the habitat. Once we feel we have enough pictures (although you can never have enough) we will move on to see the Bush dogs. The numbers for this species do fluctuate as they are breeding well and to help this continue youngsters are moved on to other collections, the numbers tend to be around 8 which gives us plenty of scope for group pictures as well as individuals hanging back, again the stream runs from the tigers through to the Bush dog enclosure and natural planting gives us the backgrounds for natural looking pictures.

Every collection has Meerkats and Knowsley is no different, these loveable animals should be seen scampering around their sand enclosure, digging, play fighting or on the lookout for predators, if we are patient and with help from the keepers this should give us some great action shots. With time and light permitting we will aim to end the session over at the wolf enclosure which currently holds two female Iberian Wolves. Smaller and more sandy coloured than their European counterparts these wolves still make wonderful subjects to photograph, especially with the last light of the day.

The focus for these evening workshops will be looking to get into the best possible situations for photography and the guides will work hard to put everyone in the right position. With the help of the keepers and special access, we will be able to deliver opportunities simply not accessible to normal park visitors.

You are welcome to arrive at the park earlier in the day and spend time at your leisure exploring the rest of the exciting animals Knowsley has to offer.

August 5, 2019

I visited Knowsley on Saturday 3rd August 2019 for this workshop. We went round the foot safari to photograph the bush dogs, meerkats and tiger. We went in the enclosure with the meerkats to get some shots at their height, and were able to get closer to the chain-link fences than you can ordinarily do as a paying visitor to the Safari Park. I think the wolves mentioned on the website must have moved as we did not see or get to photograph them on this session. The keepers (Andy and Kaz) who were escorting us were great, and it was brilliant that we went into the tiger compound to get some close up opportunities, albeit through the fence so we didn't get eaten by the tigers! I would highly recommend this session, it's just a shame that the light was very flat on Saturday after a particularly sunny day, which meant we didn't get that lovely orange light, but there's not much that anyone can do about that and you have to work with what is available (including pushing the ISO up quite high to get some sharp shots).
