We often find that guests worry about doing Safari Park photography in the winter low season, but actually if you get good light the opportunities can be excellent. A one-to-one session at Knowsley yesterday totally proved the point when we had a brilliant session with the parks Lion prides. Really strong side/back light combined with heavily shadowed backgrounds to the pictures gave us the chance to try some ‘low key’ shots. The technique is simply enough, just pushing the whole exposure down, making sure the brighter parts of the image are not too light. This is often described as ‘exposing for the highlights’ and works very well at separating your main subject from its surroundings. This set of images, were all shot at -2EV stops over the cameras initial light reading. The camera was a Canon 1Dx MkII with a 400mm lens.
