Mastering Filter Use
Photography Workshop

Immersive Learning | Practical Filter Skills

In a world dominated by digital editing software, traditional filters are sometimes overlooked. Yet when used well, they remain one of the most powerful tools available to landscape and outdoor photographers.

This immersive one-day workshop is designed to give you practical confidence in using filters effectively and creatively. Through structured demonstrations, hands-on practice and supportive guidance, you’ll learn how to use filters to improve image quality in-camera — not just in post-processing.

Our chosen location is the charming town of Cromarty, with its sweeping coastal views, historic buildings and varied subjects — the perfect environment for a focused and inspiring day of learning.

What You Can Expect During Your Session

This immersive day is built around practical understanding. Rather than simply talking about filters, we demonstrate them in real conditions and guide you as you try them yourself.

You will leave with:

  • A clear understanding of the main filter types

  • Confidence in when and why to use them

  • Practical knowledge of exposure adjustments

  • Greater control over your image quality in-camera

Learning notes are provided so you can continue developing your skills after the workshop.

Creative

You’ll have plenty of opportunity to create your own images throughout the day. By applying filters in different situations — seascapes, architecture, moving water and light — you’ll see first-hand how they can transform a scene.

Learning

The workshop covers:

  • Why filters still matter in the digital age

  • Polarising filters and managing reflections

  • Graduated ND filters for balanced exposures

  • Full ND filters for creative long exposures

  • Practical handling tips and common mistakes

The aim is not just understanding — but confident application.

Discover

Alongside new technical skills, you’ll explore the beautiful coastal setting of Cromarty and enjoy a relaxed day in good company with fellow photographers.

While this is our first dedicated one-day immersive workshop focused solely on filter use, filters and exposure control have always been an important part of our teaching across workshops and holidays.

Here’s what previous guests have said about learning technical skills with us:

“I finally understood how and when to use my filters properly. The practical demonstrations made everything click.”
Andrew

“Clear explanations, no jargon, and lots of hands-on support. I came away feeling much more confident.”
